Do You Need an Effective Cover Letter to Secure a Job Interview?

I have written enough on how job search techniques are changing with the emerging dynamics of recruitment. It is now a known fact that more and more jobs are now available through social media networks as compared to traditional newspaper advertisements.

Not many people know that #jobs can help you job posted on twitter! Those who know this certainly have a clear advantage in the job market. With the emergence of jobsites such as Monster, Workopolis, Rozee, Bayt etc and social media network such as LinkedIn, job hunters are encouraged to register and leave their profiles for recruiters to search from a wide database.

The question however is: If the need for a well crafted cover letter remains or this is an obsolete tool?

In my opinion, the new recruitment process when the process starts on social media or via internet based applications, need for a cover letter is almost eliminated. Applicants need worry about a cover letter only if it is specifically requested by the advertiser.

There are many articles available on various websites, such as Harvard Business Review or EzineArticles on how to write effective cover letter. In my views, is required, it should be prepared using the following structure:

1. Date

2. Name of the person / department

3. Complete address of the company

4. Clear reference to the advertisement.

5. Subject line must contain the job title

6. Body should contain three paragraphs and must focus on:

a. Your qualifications and experience

b. Your interpersonal capabilities

c. Timing of your availability for job (if offered)

Honestly, there is no need to write complex and lengthy cover letters, your key document is your resume, and it needs a lot more attention as compared to a letter! Ideally, if you need to attach a letter, it should only summarize key bits of your resume and it should encourage the reader to flip and read your resume also.

Remember, if you are required to submit one, your cover letter must help you standout of other applicants. Treat it as your marketing letter, brief and crisp convincing enough to secure an interview call.

Few key points in drafting an effective cover letter are:

1. Use of positive words.

2. Never say anything negative about your current job.

3. Show ambitious approach towards your career goals.

4. Relevance of your experience with the job that you are applying for.

Finally, before submitting, there is no harm in asking someone to review the cover letter. An extra pair of eyes is always recommended!

Two of the Most Common Job Search Techniques and How to Get the Most Out of Them

There are many different job search techniques and when you are applying for jobs, you have to choose a strategy which is going to work for you. This will vary according to the type of job you are looking for and the amount of experience you already have, as well as your skills and qualifications.

Newspapers and Journals

The most common way to look for work is to read the classified ads in your local or national newspapers. This is not necessarily the most effective way to find a job, but it is still widely used by employers as a method of recruitment. So it is a good place to start, especially if you don't have much experience or many contacts.

It is important that you know which days jobs are advertised in each paper. Some will have general vacancies several days a week and others will have sections on specific days for different sectors. For example, education, IT and media may all be on different days. Some newspapers will also have graduate sections. So the first step is to find out what is advertised when and in which publication.

There will also be specialist journals for different industries and you should find out which relate to your field of interest.

To benefit most from this technique, you should make a list of when and where relevant jobs will be advertised and set aside time to respond immediately. Some advertisers will want to speak to you as soon as possible, others will require a resume or application form before any face to face contact is made.

You will need to set aside time every week for the more complex applications and give yourself time to do thorough background research on the company and industry.

You should prepare a generic resume and cover letter in advance and be ready to tailor these to specific jobs as soon as the ads appear.

Always make sure you have made a note of the closing date for applications. It can be very disheartening to spend hours on an application only to find you have missed the deadline, which can easily happen if you are working on multiple applications at one time.

Agencies

Recruitment agencies are another good place to look for work. Some operate a general service, covering many different sectors and jobs, while others specialized in one particular area of work. The advantage of agencies is that they can screen jobs for you and send your resume in response to suitable vacancies.

However, it is important that you discuss your requirements in detail with the agency so that your details are going to the right employers. You should also check in frequently to see if they are finding vacancies and submitting your details.

It is also a good idea to try several agencies and then settle with one or two which have the best vacancies and are making a strong effort to find you work.

Making the best use of any job search strategies requires good organization and planning your time carefully.

Job Interviewing Techniques - 8 Steps for Successful Interviews

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the United States, in August of 2010 there were approximately 14.9 million people who were unemployed in the United States (9.6% unemployment rate). If you fall into this group of the unemployed, or if you are just looking to find a different job or career, you will want to know what are the proper techniques a person should use for securing a job.

Through our research we have discovered eight steps that will assist people during their job search process. While many of these techniques can be utilized during a telephone interview, these eight steps are most definitely recommended for an in-person interview. This in-person session is also referred to as a personal interview and it occurs when the candidate has a face-to-face meeting with a hiring manager or a search committee. This meeting can include a one-on-one interview, a group interview, or an interview during a meal.

Interviewing for a job is both an art and a science. Some people are more outgoing and comfortable in an interview setting and they come across in a very positive manner. However, if a person is not prepared for the interview they might not get the job; no matter how outgoing they are. Therefore, the key to interviewing success is to be prepared for the interview. This includes knowing and perfecting the eight steps to interviewing success:

    Developing a Personal Sales Pitch
    Completing your Interview Preparation Form
    Preparing for interview questions
    Interviewing like a consultant
    Asking questions during the interview
    Understanding the mistakes people make
    Properly closing the interview
    Following-up after the interview

Securing a job, to a large extent, is a numbers game. The more interviews you have, the more likely you will secure a job. By properly preparing for and practicing these eight steps, you can increase your chances for interviewing success and can "speed up" this numbers game.

Government Job Search Techniques for Rural Indian Women

India is a traditional country in which women are coming out of their shells, only recently. The IT boom in the country paved way for many young women to study further and earn a job. While the urban women have been exposed to various kinds of job opportunities from the previous generation, the employment market still seems a very scary one for the rural women. Such women who have little exposure to outer world can try their luck in the government jobs. It doesn't require very high English fluency. Here are a few important guidelines helping rural women to streamline their government job search.

1. Start planning your future right from a very early stage in your life. Survey the public sector job opportunities in and around your area. Plan your study accordingly.

2. Focus your government job search on fields like teaching, medical services and studies related to accounts and commerce. Most of the villages have severe shortage of doctors, teachers and people willing to serve in the rural branch of the banks. You can easily fulfill this gap if you choose to particular subjects.

3. Make it a habit to visit your local government library regularly. The library will have journals like Employment News which will list all the vacancies in the public sector. They will help you a lot in the government job search.

4. Start preparing for the UPSC and other state government oriented exams from the first year of your college. Check how the examinations are conducted throughout your study. Gather the various years question papers. Talk with your seniors appearing for such exams and improvise your preparation.

5. There are lots of quotas allocated for rural women in these jobs. There are quotas for poor women, daughters of farmers, daughters of widowed mothers, first generation graduates and community based grants for women. Make full use of this advantage in your government job search campaign. Check with your teachers and village administrative officers and get all the necessary documents ready before you appear for the exams.

6. Remember the early bird gets the fruit. The sooner you apply for such jobs, the better chance for you to land them earlier. If possible engage yourself in the part-time jobs related to the job you are planning to apply. You can show this as a previous experience when you appear for the final interview.

Landing in a public sector job is no rocket science. Comparing to the efforts taken by the urban youth to enter into institutions like IIT, these efforts are very limited. Try your level best for guaranteed success.
